The next meeting of the Central Riccarton Residents’ Association Inc will be a forum on WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 9 beginning at 7pm in the Korean Yolin Church building on the corner of Clarence and Nelson Streets. These one-hour forums provide an opportunity for residents to express their opinions on matters they think affect our area and allow for interaction with elected representatives to the City Council and Community Board.

We have invited Richard Wesley, the Green Party candidate for Wigram in this month’s general election, to introduce himself and then let him give his answers to our questions or respond to our comments on local body and regional issues. This session will let residents tell Richard Wesley what they believe are the matters of importance to residents of Riccarton. In the remaining time of the forum we will canvass current Riccarton and city issues. There will also be the opportunity to put your questions or comments to Councillor Helen Broughton and Councillor Jimmy Chen.

Consider the following:
You have an unexpected medical emergency at home – you ring for an ambulance and you are taken to hospital and admitted. Some time afterwards you are sent a bill for the ambulance call-out. Fair enough, you say.

You decide to invite some mates to your flat and blast the neighbourhood with your “music”. Noise Control are called and tell you the volume is unreasonable and you have to turn it down. You retaliate by going outside with your mates, deliberately start a fire on the road, smash bottles, and cause so much alarm to neighbours that they ring 111 and soon four police cars, two police vans and a fire engine arrive to deal with the situation and the road is cordoned off to all traffic. You expect to pay for the noise control call-out instead of the ratepayers having to pay? You expect to pay for the police and fire service resources you needlessly used up instead of it being a charge against taxpayers? You expect to pay for the damage you caused to the road instead of the ratepayers having to pay? You expect the property management firm to automatically give you a written notice of breach of tenancy agreement for denying your neighbours the ‘quiet enjoyment’ of their own properties? ...… Yeah, Right!

What do you at home think?
